Amsterdam is every bit as charming as I expected from a city of canals and bicycles.

We thought we'd be able to take a break from bread after Paris, only to discover a city of waffles and pancakes. Of course we tried them all; sweet, savory, with cream, without.

But my favorite part of Amsterdam was rush hour every evening. Bike lanes overflow with superstylish commuters of all ages, while the actual road is empty. Everyone looks a little happier and healthier, with an extra rosy glow to their cheeks. This is how it should be.

I love Amsterdam. This might make me sound crazy, but I might prefer to live there over Paris because there aren't really any expectations attached to it. As long as you aren't smoking and going to the red light district, you can really make it your own city. In Paris, it felt like you had to go to the Eiffel tower, you had to be sophisticated, you should do all these Paris-related activities. But so few people dream of travelling to Holland, and there aren't many {or even any?} romantic/slushly/amazing films there. In Paris I kind of wanted to be Amelie but in Amsterdam I just wanted to ride a bike--which is pretty much what I want here in Cambridge too.
amsterdam was one of my favorite "surprise" cities. i didn't have any expectations for it, and i just feel in love with the canals, museums, night life, restaurants. lovely pictures.
aw didn't realize you were coming to Amsterdam! What fun! My husband and I moved here three months ago and I have to agree on rush hour. It gives me a rush of excitement as I walk through the over-crowded train station, pick up my bike and pedal home. It's especially lovely on days like today. It was extra chilly, but amazingly sunny. Caught the sunrise on the way to the train station - stunning! Made me so thankful to be living here. Glad you enjoyed it (and tried the pancakes!).
amsterdam is just magical, isn't it? i was there this exact month abotu two years ago and found it absolutely charming. i hope that seeing the anne frank house is on your list of must-sees. despite the long lines, it's totally worth it.
Aaah...yeah, Amsterdam good choice, looks like you had a great time (did you also try 'poffertjes'? These are so yummy and Dutch)!!
It's the place where I will live when I'm a grown up ;-)
At this point I am to restless and am exploring other European cities. But Amsterdam will definitely be my home in some years!
Kiss!
I just love your entries. You make it all look so wonderful and it appears you are having such a good time. I travel vicariously through your pictures. thank you!
I definetly want to live there next year or the next. I went there last Christmas without a clue or any expectations at all and it surprised me how much at home I felt. I loved the no-curtains windows with those gorgeous and cozy decorated insides :)
Where are you on picture 9??

Gorgeous photos! I adore Amsterdam - hopefully one day I'll go there!
oh, i didn't know they just rode bikes over there! i'm a little behind on europe trivia. but that seems so perfect. a rush hour of adorable bikes.
one of my most favourite places on earth! :)
beautiful photos, as per usual. my wanderlust lives vicariously through your blog. the owner of the bakery i work at lived in amsterdam for a while and she seems to have loved it - we have "absinthe lime macaroons" that are green and covered in glitter, and an "amsterdam cake." too fun, i hope to go one day!
kitten roar, could you mail me the recipe for the absinthe lime macaroons? I'd love to try them!! :)
