nanaimo bars.

nanaimo bars

The moment I saw a photo of Nanaimo Bars, I knew I had to make them. I had no idea what they tasted like or what the process entailed, but something about them tugged at my heart strings. They are just so stinkin cute, and as it turns out, also delicious.

nanaimo bars

All three layers -- the coconut pecan crust, vanilla cream cheese filling, and dark chocolate ganache -- work so well together, it's almost unfair. My self-control has consequently taken a turn for the worse.

nanaimo bars are one of my biggest weaknesses... their namesake city (where they were invented) is on the island where i grew up, and they are everywhere on vancouver island! they are so much a part of my life that i couldn't believe you're only just learning about them now :)
and i have to let you in on a little secret... if you are loving nanaimo bars, i suggest you try to look up a recipe for "kleinburg bars" - i believe they are also a vancouver island invention (possibly at the little cafe of my university in victoria), with a peanut butter cream taking the place of the regular filling. they are unbelievably addicting, and the main reason i gained weight in university. yummmm!!

sometimes when i make desserts that i have no self control over.. i'll hide them high up in the cabinet so i can't reach. THESE would be one of those desserts. no doubt.

I've got to try these! I at first thought they were some chocolate and peanut butter concoction but learning they've got nuts and coconut in them has me all the more intrigued! They are quite adorable and definitely are a dessert I'm going to be testing out for myself soon!

Greetings from the home of the Nanaimo Bar. The best way to sample one of these delights is to visit Nanaimo of course, but if you would like to make one of our world famous bars at home, you will find several great recipes at http://nanaimo-info.com/gpage.html. It is a well known fact that Nanaimo Bars are not fattening when eaten during our International Bathtub Race Festival, or at Christmas time when eaten with egg nog. :^)
If you would like to see more of what Nanaimo has to offer I invite you to check out a few slides at http://www.nanaimo-info-blog.com/p/nanaimo-video-and-slides.html.
I know you will find a trip to Nanaimo an enjoyable experience, and if you come during the summer months you can enjoy one of our many summer time celebrations which include the International Bathtub Races, The Silly Boat Regatta, The Dragon Boat Races, The Summertime Blues Festival, Symphony in the Park, all of which are held in our world class waterfront park and promenade.
Hope to See YOU Soon!

Cheers
Jim

LOVE this post. I grew up 45 minutes north of Nanaimo. I only tried to make them once - when I was about 14 - and the yellow ran right out when you cut them. Maybe I'll try again!
