biscuits.

homemade biscuits (with sharp cheddar and sea salt)

Biscuits (along with pie crusts, cinnamon rolls, and soufflés) intimidate me. I don't even own a rolling pin, which is usually my excuse for ignoring these kinds of recipes.

But, it has become increasingly apparent to me that I need to endure this biscuit-making labor of love -- for myself because I was dreaming about their flaky beauty, and for my friends throwing another dinner party, because my contribution of caramel salted brownies is getting a bit monotonous (although I still brought them, too).

biscuits, fresh out of the oven

A few days ago Erin posted a recipe for biscuits, and I have been thinking about them ever since. (In fact, I was up at 4 am yesterday morning thinking about them.) I followed her instructions carefully and methodically -- using a wine bottle as a rolling pin, a mason jar as a biscuit cutter, adding sharp cheddar to the dough and sprinkling more, along with some coarse sea salt, on top.

The first bite of a homemade biscuit fresh out of the oven makes every second of labor worth it. End of story.

okay i think i have to make these this weekend. and for the record, i've had to describe to SO many people here (in germany) that a biscuit is NOT a cookie (thanks, brits). but these look amazing. oh and soufflés are the most intimidating, ever.

Biscuits are my favorite. Last winter, I made them every Saturday, but this year I've been too busy. I may have to try them again.

P.S. Try the cook's illustrated recipe- it's for drop biscuits, but they're amazing and more or less fail-proof.

Dang, those look so good. You have very lucky friends! I think my measure of how good biscuits are is the crumbliness.

Those look terrific and are on my list of things to make this weekend. The other thing is dutch oven bread. I have heard this is fairly simple too. Thanks for sharing.

Mmm, I'm such a sucker for a good biscuit! True story: in recent years, two consecutive boyfriends decided that biscuit would be a cute petname for me. Not sure what to make of that, haha.

my best friend, hailey (of thecolorplaid, who commented just above!), and i actually MADE these on saturday purely off of your inspiration.
she is much more of a baker than i, i'm pretty dumb in the kitchen, but you inspired us to whip up a GREAT batch of biscuits!
thanks olivia! xo.

I'm visiting my parents in South Carolina right now... Something about being back in the South really makes me crave biscuits! In LA, I feel like biscuits are kind of a "dont", but being back here, I feel like they're just part of my lifestyle and couldn't possibly be unhealthy! I was thinking about making some this week, and by happenstance, I found your blog on My Suitcase Heart's blogroll. (She has a really great blog roll, by the way.) I'm going to give this recipe a stab! If you have any specific suggestions, let me know. : )
