hope + union (and vacating the tree house).

hope + union
minimalist decor, so peaceful
banana nutella turnover, covered in little bits of sugar
books, coffee, pretty setting

The past few days have been rough. My weekend was lovely, but apart from that I have been a chaotic, anxious, overly emotional, not-hot-mess. The tree house is fun in theory - and of course wonderful when Tyler is actually in town - but living in constant fear of creatures (and roaches) and having those fears come true late at night would lead anyone to a hotel in their own city, drinking a chocolate milkshake from Burger King for dinner. Right?

It's not just the roaches. It's the lack of peace of mind which leads to negativity in all areas of my life: school, sleep, health, general well-being/happiness, etc. And you know how when one thing goes wrong everything goes wrong? Well, I lost the most sentimentally valuable item I own, my cameo ring from 1900 that happens to be irreplaceable. I'm hoping it will show up like it did a couple years ago when this happened.

Complaints aside, I have a superhuman mother who helps me figure things out, a sweet boyfriend who sends me flowers, friends that make me laugh, and Hope + Union. It's the most beautiful, peaceful coffee shop I've ever experienced, and they serve banana nutella turnovers from heaven.* I don't know what I would do without this perfect, cozy, safe haven that has become my new home.

*From heaven, or Wildflour Pastry. One of the two.

I hope you feel better soon! What a lovely shop - so nice to have that space!

oh man, i know this feeling. my great funk of 2009 that lasted (what felt like) forever was brought on by bed-bugs. getting them and then having to live out of garbage bags for two weeks, feeling so unsafe, so uncomfortable in my own space--it undid me. truly, it was so awful. so i'm thinking about you now and hoping it gets better and sending good thoughts your way. did you get to move out?

ps: that coffee shop looks like sheer perfection: clean lines, heaven.

Ah. I'm feeling pretty much the same way. A bit overwhelmed and not enough sleep (which ALWAYS puts me in funky moods). That coffee shop looks like a dream. The exposed brick and the stairs...mmm.
I'm going to have to start compiling a lot of your places to go; senior trip is in order this summer and I do believe we're coming to Charleston!

Get your sleep. I think that balances the mind more than just about anything. At least in my experience anyways.

@wilybrunette Meg, I'm so glad you understand! Sometimes it's hard explaining to people that it's most than me just being scared of bugs... and yes, thanks to my amazing mother I'm moving out today!

hang in there, I too have spent sleepless nights with the light on deathly afraid of a tiny insect. I blame these bugs not only for the dark cirles under my eyes but for the grumpy mood that follows. thank god you have the piece if heaven coffee shop. oh and I'll put go thoughts out there regarding your ring!

olivia rae said...

haha @Jaclyn, I totally am the same way. BUT, for the record, the roach that was the final straw was the size of the palm of my hand. monster roach.

I need to try Hope+Union.. I've heard about it but haven't been.
And losing your ring.. I can't even imagine. I have a ring of my grandmothers that I thought I lost and went ballistic for days and then found it. I hope you find it!!

Oh no! I'm sorry these past days have been so yucky. Isn't it amazing, though, how much a little time at a coffee shop can lift ones' spirits?

aw, sweet olivia, sorry to hear that you're going through such a hard time. i love the small reminders of normalcy that we have -- like your little coffee shop, family and tyler. i am sure you'll find your ring. sending good luck vibes your way! xxxo

(Since I also live kind of in a tree-apartment....)
I almost had a heart attack the other day while I was skyping with my sister when a HUGE roach crawled right past me on the wall. (My sister died laughing but I was freaking out). And we also get little jumping spiders which don't seem as scary for some reason....roaches are the worst in my opinion. I never get used to them.

p.s. moms are wonderful, a milkshake for dinner is totally justifiable after that, and I hope you find your beloved cameo ring!

Olivia feel better!! There are two sides to every coin and to experience good stuff there has to be lack luster stuff. As I write this I think .. easier said than done ... but just the same YOU will find that camera ring I just know it. I am glad you found that sweet cafe and the title HOPE and UNION is too perfect. HUGS my sweet friend! xo

Sending lots of good karma and happy thoughts your way to find your ring! If I've left my wallet on a public bus in England, my phone in a Target and gotten them BOTH back, I think your ring is making it's way on home to you <3

Olivia- Have you said a prayer to St. Anthony yet? He is known as the Finder of Lost Things.

He has never failed me. He has found everthing from loose diamonds to my grandmothers stolen necklace for me. Here is how the prayer goes:

Saint Anthony, Saint Anthony. Please come around. Something is lost and cannot be found.

When you say it you really have to pray hard and say it. Sometimes your thoughts will guide you right to the item or it just shows up on a pillow like mine usually do. Hope it works!

I'll say one for you too!

I so, so understand... there's just something so unsettling about your space not being yours, the way things can be off-just slightly-and suddenly every piece of your world feels just a little bit unrecognizable. Hang in there & in the meantime, milkshakes for dinner are most definitely a good choice :)

Very inspiring! I lost my ring the other day, it's super old and super sentimental and then I oddly enough had a dream about finding it under the couch and viola, when I looked the next day, it was there!
I'm going to sending good thoughts your way and hope that you find it soon

good luck!

p.s. we are going hiking this weekend and staying in an old cow-herder's hut...and I'm freaking out about bugs, cold, scary nighttime mountains, and no duvets :)

Thank you-this post perfectly describes how I felt for most of September. I was a mess. It stemmed from work but ultimately seeped into all areas of my life.

Sometimes its nice to be reminded how important support and a god coffee can be.

Hope you're doing better : )
