happy!

We had another blissfully lazy weekend at the beach, taking the two-week mark to an entirely new level. Unless you count the ocean as a proper shower. I'm blaming it on the out-of-control heat, which fogged up my camera lens and forced me to drink chocolate milkshakes.

I finally got around to reading The Bell Jar. I adore Sylvia Plath's voice and dark humor, but overall I found it depressing, knowing the tragic outcome of her life. Now I'm reading The History of Love by Nicole Krauss which makes me laugh out loud and miss my grandparents. I knew anyone married to Jonathan Safran Foer was bound to be amazing.

Mostly, I'm enjoying this invaluable time with my family. I think of it as our month of "free time," because there is no pressure or even thought to be productive. My sister and I can sit on our bed for three hours straight, playing with photobooth and making up accents, without even noticing the time passing. It's pretty much perfect.

Oh, I love both of those books :) After reading The Bell Jar, I read every Sylvia Plath biography I could get my hands on. Such a sad lady.

The Bell Jar depressed me too - it's just so sad.

I'm so jealous of your being able to enjoy the sun where it's meant to be enjoyed - outside on the beach! I'm currently in an office looking at the sun through a window...pretty rubbish really!

the bell jar is one of my favorites, although i too get sad when i think of her life. have you read "epilogue" by anne roiphe? i read that right after history of love. it was beautiful.

I always feel like I'm in some sort of little fairy tale land when I visit your blog. You have a way of presenting things so simply and beautifully.

You will LOVE The History of Love! It's so beautifully quirky in the way it's written, I found myself circling and underlining all these wonderful little phrases :)

i haven't read The Bell Jar in years, but I love Plath's poetry. I actually just bought myself a new copy so i could read it again. I did not know about History of Love, but I am totally reading it because I love Jonathan Safran Foer.

Your pictures are so gorgeous Olivia.

And I agree, I read The Bell Jar last summer and thought it was terribly depressing. I will have to check out A history of Love.

dreamy, dreamy dreamy dreamy. looks like a magical world over there and the kind of summer that haunts your heart. maybe my sister and i should plan a get-away for a month in a beach house....i crave that mysterious timeless sister vibe that sweeps in and sweeps everything else out. talk about the history of love, that is it right there.

yeah, i read the bell jar in high school and the line that stands out in my memory is a happy one, "i took a deep breath and listened to the old brag of my heart. i am, i am, i am." not sure if i'm quoting it perfectly, but it gives me a good feeling. i think i have shaped my consciousness to (usually) only remember good things. lucky for me? or naive? not sure.

anyway keep dreaming and dillydallying sister and i am grateful to you for sharing your beautiful life.

You make me desperate for the beach! We usually only go for a week, but I am starting to consider begging my parents for a month next time! Love all your beach posts, and loved following your European travels!

I've been dying to read "A History of Love" because she's married to Foer! I love him and I know that I would love anyone married to him :) I'm so glad you're having a beautiful summer, dear! xo

gorgeous photos as usual! i read the bell jar a few years ago and i remember being in creepily similar circumstances to the narrator (not the depressing ones). i really enjoyed it but yes, it is quite a downer!
