restaurants in unexpected places are always better.

located in a spruced up former gas station, fuel is our new favorite restaurant. it's a caribbean cantina with entrees like black bean burgers, ahi tuna tacos, and fried goat cheese salads. but the best part is their side dishes - sweet potato fries, boiled peanuts, and fried plantains. the food is so beautiful and it tastes even better. it's like healthy, innovative comfort food.

besides the food being to-die-for, it's decorated with colorful maps and vintage gasoline cans. the walls are clear garage doors that stay open during the spring and summer, so it's bright and cheery all the time. it's also located less than a block from my favorite bakery in the world, so it's really a win-win situation.

i LOVE sweet potato fries, much better than typical french fries, in my opinion. i've discovered that they cook much better (as in crispier) when you cut them into chips, which is why i'm currently pining for a mandolin.

your carrot cake looked absolutely delicious, by the way. you should really try out the carrot oatmeal raisin cookies on the biggirlssmallkitchen site - super tasty.

boiled peanuts are my all time favorite thing! I love the idea of turning an old gas station into a restaurant and they named it fuel... so genius!

i love unexpected restaurants! years ago we found the best poutine place in an old victorian-era house - it had about 18 different types of poutine and a jazz band playing. and we were never able to find it again. it was like a dream...
